Jim ends up in the quiet corner of the school again, chalk and chemical smells and beakers with disgusting liquids bubbling all around him.
He needs to research a poison.
    The proper poison.
    The right poison.
    Everything has to be perfect.

Sherlock made his way back to school carrying the collected evidence excitedly in his bag - the brick dust, the green paint, the cigarette end and the tobacco ash. As he approached the chemistry labs he could barely contain his eagerness to get down to work.

He dropped his bag off his shoulder and removed his lock picking kit from his pocket. He wasn't very good at this but he practiced every night on a set of padlocks in his room and he was getting better. He bent down and was about to pick the lock on the door of the lab when he realised it was already open.

His heart beating a little faster, Sherlock cautiously pushed open the door of the lab and walked inside. "Hello?" he called out quietly. "Anyone in here?"

Jim jumps--a vial of something or other smashes to the floor. Hydrochloric acid, he thinks it said on the bottle. Wouldn't have been any good anyway.
"Er, hey," he replies, turning to see Sherlock. They have been running into each other rather a lot, haven't they? "I won't turn you in if you don't?"
He gives a sheepish grin, placating, though his mind races.
Ways to make sure Sherlock doesn't turn him in.

Sherlock stepped into the laboratory as he heard some glass smash on the floor and turned on the light. He noticed Jim crouched in the corner looking through some chemicals and frowned at him.

"What are you doing here?" he asked accusingly. "The labs are closed."

He quickly realised Jim could probably ask the same question of him and he blushed a little, approaching the smaller boy and taking his rucksack off his shoulder.

"I've got some things I need to look at under the microscope," he offered by way of explanation. "Why are you here? I won't tell."

"Just...think these things are interesting," he replies. 'Looking for a good poison' probably wouldn't go over well, although this lab rat is probably the best person to ask.
He stands, puts the vial currently in his hand back on the shelf, dances over to where Sherlock stands and peering at the 'things that he wants to look at under a microscope'. "What's that for?"

Sherlock nodded and smiled. He could relate to that. Maybe this kid was into Chemistry too. Maybe they had something in common. What was his name again? Oh yes. Jim.

He grinned and showed him the items excitedly, before preparing the microscope. "I found these at a crime scene," he explained with a glint in his eye. "A cat has gone missing. The owner think's it's been stolen. I'm investigating," he added proudly.

"Investigating. I see." There's a snap of interest in Jim's eyes, but he tamps it down quickly. "Have you done it before?"
He remembers a cat from somewhere. Hmm.
    Whoops.

Sherlock shrugged and took out the first item - the cigarette butt. "I've done a bit but not like this. This is my first proper....thing." He frowned, trying to think of a better word. "My first proper case," he corrected himself with a smile.

He put the evidence under the microscope and looked at it, then nodded to the corner where Jim had been sat before. "What were you looking at over there?" he asked. "Some dangerous chemicals in that cupboard...I'd be careful."

"Paid?" Sherlock exclaimed, surprised Jim was asking. He laughed. "Nah. I just do it for fun." He frowned slightly.

"Doesn't sound like a bad idea though all the same...I mean...some people actually make a living doing things like that don't they? Detectives, investigators and so on," he rambled, almost thinking alive, then looked up from his microscope and turned to Jim. "What do you wanna do then? I mean...when you're older?"

"Haven't decided yet. Don't have to, I don't think." Grinning, Jim puts the area he's been in to rights, keeping a few little vials out of sight, just in case they cause suspicion in an amateur crime-solver.
Interesting, how what he's planning is a 'crime'. Illegality is new.
    Exciting.

Sherlock could see Jim fiddling with something out of the corner of his eye and glanced up suspiciously. "What are you doing?" he asked, noticing he'd moved back over to the dangerous chemicals section.

"Careful over there," he mumbled and nodded at one of the bottles near Jim's hand. "That one's poisonous."

"I'm putting things back--am being careful." He looks at the vial in his hand. "Clostridium Botulinum?" Poisonous? Had he missed it...? No, but he'd dismissed it, being unaware of what it did.

Sherlock smiled and nodded. "One of the world's deadliest poisons," he explained. "Nasty stuff...añd virtually untracable if applied in the right way. Or should I say the wrong way," his eyes twinkled, then he blushed slightly realising Jim might think he was a little weird.

He went back to his studying and swapped the green paint for the tobacco ash. "Sorry," he muttered. "I'm...I'm kind of interested in crime...particularly murder. I read a lot about it."

"No, it's all right." Jim's heart jumps a bit and he mentally marks down the name of the poison that he's holding before he puts it back on the shelf. Sounds like...the appropriate poison for his endeavors. But he can't be sure, and he'll have to do some more research. "You're right, it's interesting."
More interesting than you'll ever know.
